Surely you’ve had fried chicken before, but that’s not going to stop me from bragging about how good it is! Crispy on the outside, tender juicy meat on the inside… it just doesn’t get any better than that.
Shrimp & Grits
This is a traditional dish that originated in South Carolina Lowcountry. Cook up some creamy grits, add in fresh shrimp and spices, and you’ve got one of South Carolina’s most iconic meals.
I know you’re probably thinking, what in the world is “chicken bog”? This tasty dish consists of slow cooked rice, chicken and sausage. This recipe can vary with different combinations of herbs and spices, but I can promise you that I’ve never had one plate of chicken bog that I didn’t like.
Biscuits & Gravy
This breakfast favorite is one you can never get enough of. Warm fluffy buttermilk biscuits and creamy sausage gravy- pair with some bacon and you’ve got one delicious start to your day.
This deep-fried cornmeal-based treat is a common appetizer for many southern and seafood dishes. Fun-fact: Hushpuppies acquired their name from hunters and fishermen that would fry up their leftover breading and give it to their dogs to “hush the puppies” during cook-outs.
Nothing pairs with southern food better than an ice cold glass of Grandma’s sweet tea. A note to northerners- this is similar to the classic iced tea, only with a bit more sugar (okay, A LOT more sugar).
We may not be the only region where this is a staple food, but nobody does barbecue quite like the south does. Around here, BBQ is slow-cooked pulled pork and is most often lathered with a mustard-based sauce. Pair it with all the fixins’ such as coleslaw, collard greens, mac & cheese and a piece of cornbread.
